Bulleh Shah: The Rumi of Punjab

Bulleh shah is undoubtedly the one of the greatest sufi the subcontient had ever had.The way he influenced the Punjabi, no one ever did. Bulleh Shah gave a new breath to Punjabi through his ecstatic poetry. He had the ability to confine deep and profound philosophies into simple poetry. His poetry adds a new dimension of how we look into things. He gave us an alternate view of everything we believed.

Bulleh Shah poetry revolved around humans. He wanted us to escape from this world’s illusions and escape from our virtual existence and find the true purpose of our creation . He wanted us to dive into the journey of discovering our own self. For example :

Parh parh Alam te faazil hoya
Te kaday apnay aap nu parhya ee na
Bhaj bhaj warna ay mandir maseeti
Te kaday mann apnay wich warya ee na

Here he criticizes us that by reading books we think that we have gained knowledge but in reality the real knowledge comes when we discover our own self. He further says that you think by going to Mosque and Temple, you think you found God but in reality to find God you don’t need to go anywhere. The God is in your heart but you waste your time by thinking God is confined to specific places.

Sir Te Topi Te Niyat Khoti
Lena Ki Sir Topi Dhar Ke
Tasbeeh Phri Par Dil Na Phiria
Lena Ki Tasbeeh Hath Pharh Ke
Here Bulleh shah is describing our dual nature hypocrisy that we think that by covering heads and reciting few beads makes us Religious. He asks what do you attain from wearing caps and reciting beads if your heart doesn’t change and become pure. You do all this physical acts yet you failed to attain the God. So all these physical acts have zero value as long as your heart doesn’t match with your acts.
Na main momin vich maseetaan
Na main vich kufar diyan reetaan
Na main paakaan vich paleetaan
Na main moosa na firown

Here Bulleh Shah says that he is not a believer inside the mosque nor he has characteristics of infidel. He says he is not even pure among impure. Here what Bulleh Shah is implying is that he is not an angel or some devil. He is just a simple human who is living in this world trying to find his creator.

Makkay gayaan, gal mukdee naheen
Pawain sow sow jummay parrh aaeey
Ganga gayaan, gal mukdee naheen
Pawain sow sow gotay khaeeay

Bulleh Shah believed that by just going to Makkah and taking bath in Ganga won’t get you closer to God. It doesn’t matter how many times you goto Makkah. All these physical acts are useless until and unless your heart starts becoming mirror of your actions. When your heart becomes pure only than you can find God and these physical worships will be useful.
